Ludhiana, the largest city of Punjab, is located at the south bank of Sutlej River. The city has a huge population with more than 40 lakh people residing in the main city as well as other small towns falling under the district Ludhiana. The city is centrally located on the National Highway from New Delhi to Amritsar. It is also at a distance of just 100 kms from the state capital Ludhiana.

Ludhiana got its name from the Lodhi Dynasty, which are believed to have found the city long ago in 1480. Previously, the city was named as ‘Lodhiana’ meaning ‘town of the Lodhis.’ Afterwards, the name was changed to Ludhiana.

Administrative Services in Ludhiana

The responsibility for the city’s general administration rests with the Deputy Commissioner (DC). He is also the executive head of the city and performs three different functions including that of Deputy Commissioner, District Magistrate and District Collector.

As a District Magistrate, he is responsible for maintaining the law and order in the city and also supervises the police force in the district. The District Magistrate is also authorized to look over the offices of Tehsildars, Treasuries, Naib Tehsildars, Hospitals, Jails, Blocks, Schools, Dispensaries and various other offices of Punjab Government.

Maintaining law and order in the city is the sole responsibility of Ludhiana police. Headed by the commissioner of Police, Ludhiana police force strives to create a healthy environment for the development and growth of the society and also creates awareness about social evils like sex abuse, gambling, drug addiction etc.

Headed by the mayor, The Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana is responsible for public transportation, roads, birth and death registration, water supply, sewage waste management, public safety, maintenance of buildings, parks and garden.

Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority or GLADA is an authority specially formulated for urban development. The office of GLADA is located on Ferozepur Road, Ludhiana. The authority has been specifically created with a purpose to organize, structure and design the financial and commercial hub of the state of Punjab, i.e., Ludhiana. GLADA is responsible for the maintenance and overall development of the commercial areas within Ludhiana that are under the jurisdiction of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.
